"Preying Eyes"

Wilsall, MT - 2018

The red-tailed hawk, otherwise known as buteo jamaicensis, is one of my favorite hawks out there. I grew up with them in Minnesota, and I am lucky to see them hunt every day in Montana. From seeing them swoop down to grab mice to watching them soar overhead with a snake writhing around in its claws—they are always around hunting… and watching.

I came across this guy while searching creek beds for moose. I had my eyes down naturally, but noticed some movement in my peripheral in a tree above me. I was able to lock eyes with him for a few minutes while I diverted my tripod to the sky to capture those Preying Eyes.
